What Your Child, Teen, or Young Adult May Be Navigating

Neurodivergent children, teens, and young adults may struggle in ways that are easy to misread. What looks like avoidance, irritability, shutdown, distraction, or lack of motivation may actually be connected to anxiety, overwhelm, executive functioning challenges, sensory stress, or difficulty knowing where to start.

Support may be helpful if you or your child are noticing:

• Difficulty starting tasks, staying organized, or following through

• Big emotions, shutdowns, outbursts, or reactions that feel hard to recover from

• Anxiety, avoidance, school stress, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations

• Low motivation, procrastination, or difficulty with daily routines

• Social stress, friendship challenges, or difficulty navigating relationships

• Low confidence, self-criticism, or struggles with self-advocacy

• Challenges related to autism, ADHD, neurodivergence, or major life transitions

These struggles are often signs that someone is trying to manage more than they can easily explain. With the right support, we can begin to understand what is happening and build tools that feel practical, respectful, and realistic.

HOW ADHD AND AUTISM SUPPORT CAN HELP

Practical Tools for Executive Functioning

Support for ADHD, autism, and neurodivergence gives children, teens, young adults, and families a space to better understand what is happening beneath the surface. Challenges with motivation, task initiation, emotional regulation, anxiety, avoidance, or relationships are not treated as character flaws. They are explored with curiosity, care, and respect for how each person’s brain and nervous system work.

At Island Park Therapy, this work blends connection, structure, and practical strategies. Sessions may focus on coping skills, executive functioning, flexible thinking, self-advocacy, social relationships, confidence, and tools for home, school, work, and everyday life.

Family support and collaboration can also be part of the process. When a child, teen, or young adult is struggling, parents and caregivers often need support too. Together, we help clients and families build greater understanding, strengthen skills, and find steadier ways forward.

NEURO-AFFIRMING ADHD AND AUTISM SUPPORT IN BROCKVILLE

Support at Island Park is shaped around each client’s age, needs, goals, and comfort level. In the first sessions, the focus is on building connection, understanding what feels hard, and creating a supportive space where children, teens, young adults, and families can begin to make sense of what is happening.

As trust builds, sessions may focus on emotional regulation, executive functioning, task initiation, anxiety, avoidance, confidence, self-advocacy, social relationships, and daily routines. Support may include practical tools, visual supports, flexible thinking strategies, values-based work, and skills that can be used at home, school, work, and in everyday life.

Parents and caregivers can also be an important part of the process. Support may include parent check-ins, family collaboration, or practical guidance to help you better understand your child, teen, or young adult and support them with more clarity, confidence, and connection.

ADHD AND AUTISM SUPPORT

PRACTICAL, NEURO-AFFIRMING SUPPORT FOR DAILY LIFE

Support for ADHD, autism, and neurodivergence often works best when it is practical, flexible, and connected to real life. Sessions may include conversation, creative tools, visual supports, structured activities, movement, fidgets, problem-solving, and strategies that help clients better understand themselves and what they need.

At Island Park Therapy, neuro-affirming support may include emotional regulation, executive functioning strategies, anxiety and avoidance support, self-advocacy, social and relationship skills, parent collaboration, and practical tools for home, school, work, and daily life.

Sessions may include:

Executive Functioning Support
Support with planning, organization, task initiation, follow-through, routines, procrastination, and breaking overwhelming tasks into more manageable steps.

Emotional Regulation Skills
Clients may learn to notice what is happening in their body, name emotions, understand triggers, and practise tools for calming, coping, and recovering after big feelings.

Anxiety and Avoidance Support
Support may focus on understanding worry, avoidance, overwhelm, school stress, social stress, and the patterns that can make everyday responsibilities feel harder to face.

Creative and Visual Tools
Whiteboards, worksheets, visual supports, art, stories, fidgets, and creative activities can help clients explore thoughts, emotions, goals, and challenges in a way that feels more accessible than talking alone.

Self-Advocacy and Confidence Building
Sessions may support clients in understanding their strengths, communicating needs, setting boundaries, asking for help, and building a stronger sense of self.

Parent Support and Collaboration
Caregivers can be part of the process. Parent sessions or check-ins may help families better understand neurodivergent needs and support change at home, school, and in daily routines.
